STANDARD SINGLES – THE LOWDOWN

Not yet as popular as the more socialble doubles format, but ganining in popularity, especially as the sport continues to attracted young players able to cover the entire court alone more easily. 

The Court

In standard singles the entire court area following the service is in play, no reduction in size

The Serve

  1. The serve starts from the right (even) court
  2. The serve must be underhand and diagonally placed across court
  3. The ball must clear the no-volley zone line and bounce in the opponent’s diagonal service court
  4. After each point is won by the server both players move to sideways to the opposite court and this continues for each point until the server loses a point. 
  5. If the server loses a point, it is sideout and the opposition get possession of the serve, from which always starts from the right hand court after sideout. 
 

Serving Sequence:

  • First serve from the right side.
  • If you win the point, serve again from the opposite side (left).
  • Keep alternating sides with each point won.
  • If you lose a point while serving, your opponent gets the serve and starts from the right side
 

Scoring

  1. Only the server can score points
  2. Games are to 11
  3. Win by 2 clear points

Two-Bounce Rule:

As the same a doubles, both players must let the ball bounce once before volleying (hitting it in the air) 

Non-Volley Zone: As the same as the doubles volleying is not allowed in the area close to the net (7 feet from the net) known as the no volleyzone or the kitchen. Your foot cannotbe touching the line when you volley and you cannot volley and then as part of the shot fall into the NVZ/kitchen.
